DJ Sober of Decade Clothing recently approached me and asked me to do a flyer for an upcoming Top Notch event with 7l, DJA1, and himself. This was pretty cool because these guys are talented artists themselves and don’t really need my help at all, but of course I accepted. I wanted to make this flyer very regal and make it look like an old letter press invitation to a scholarly club or something. I really enjoyed the way this came out. I didn’t stray far from me usual style but I tried some new things that I really enjoyed. If you get a chance too stop by The Cavern on the 28th and check this event out! Should be dope!

Criterion Collection DVD Covers

I have always loved great DVD covers. I think there is something so appealing to the format of a DVD case. It is very sleek, and is just a great width and height for a great piece of art. Most of the covers I have enjoyed over the years are from the Criterion Collection. I don’t know what’s in the water at their offices but they always have some of the most stunning designs. I love that they rethink each movie and put an appropriate new design to it. Something that is more artistic and not promotion for a box office hit. Something more subtle. I saw these posted on grain edit and it reminded me of all of these great designs I have sitting in my DVD collection. Get some inspired! The hand drawn type on Monocle is amazing, the layout for Pierret Le Fou is mouth watering, and the continuing style of the Wes Anderson films is perfect.

Objektiv One X Fresherthan “Laser Tiger”

I recently started writing for Fresherthan.com and my first assignment handed to me was to answer the question “What is the greatest gift you could ever receive for Christmas?”. I promptly replied with this statement and an illustration to accompany it. Prepare for the awesomeness that is Laser Tiger:

“Hello, my name is Objektiv One. If I could have anything in the whole wide world for Christmas it would be a giant laser tiger. This tiger would be specially bred to shoot lasers out of its eyes and be extraordinarily large. I would also like a tuxedo and a beaver skin top hat so when accompanying my laser tiger in public I represent myself and laser tiger in the most professional manner.

My reasons for wanting this specific gift is because a laser tiger and tuxedo would solve all of my problems in life. It would make me look dashing, handsome and regal. On the other hand people would fear me when I wanted to be feared. It would also solve my transportation situation. In this day and age spending money on gas is getting bothersome and a laser tiger would always be available to transport me where I needed to go. Laser tiger could solve my financial instabilities as well because with laser tiger I would always have work. We could do all sorts of tasks like fight wars, protect people, look awesome, be in the circus, rob people, laser beam into bank vaults, and hold people for ransom with said laser beams. Not to mention with the addition of my tuxedo I could be prepared for all types of social situations like weddings, funerals, silent film acting, and possibly even being knighted. Basically, not having a laser tiger, tuxedo, beaver skin top hat combo is making my life really hard.I have sketched up an image below of myself with the laser tiger and tuxedo to illustrate the power and nobility that having this gift would achieve.” — Fresherthan.com

The Zonders “Surreal Illustration”

I dont know much about The Zonders except they are German and they are very kick ass at working in square format. This triple German threat makes surrealistic art that verges on the edge of Escher but also retains an edge of modernity. I love the imagery these artists use, and also how they use the square format. When you make lots of album covers sometimes it gets hard to try new things because everything is the same size. However, The Zonders’ do a wonderful job and manage to do so with some of the best collage work ever. Star closely at these and notice the amount of detail put into these pieces, and also the detail it took to make these pieces mesh together. Very great work. Hopefully an inspiration to you as well.

Strong Arm Steady “Best Of Times” (Feat. Phonte)(Prod. By Madlib)

I’m sure by now your favorite blog has posted this, but I couldn’t resist because I love Madlib. Also, I love the Stones Throw aesthetic. I can’t pass up a reason to post this cover art. Is is absolutely a dream. It’s an amazing piece of art that is instantly contagious when you see it. Strong Arm Steady could not have made a better move by having Madlib handle the production for “In Search Of Stoney Jackson”. I feel like this is a great way to make some dope grimey hip hop and reconnect with the underground and show they are still relevant. I’m guessing Kweli and his label hooked this one up. I must say, what a great idea. Plus, Phonte graces the track as well, which makes it even better then it could be…… An all star line up, dope production, and amazing artwork… I’m excited.

“Graphisms” By Nebojsa Cevitkovic – Handdrawn Typography At Its Best

“Graphisms” is an exhibition that displays the simple yet amazing works by Serbian artist Nebojsa Cevitkovic.When I stumbled across this I was simply stunned at the typography. In fact, I was mesmerized by it. I stared at it for hours just studying the simplicity of the designs but how potent and perfect they were. The designs themselves are stripped to their bare minimum but tell a vast story that will make you laugh out loud. The typography is by far my favorite though. Nebojsa is a master of hand drawn typography and can connect many different letter styles perfectly and cohesively. Enjoy this. It inspired me to hand draw typography for days, and since then these works have expanded my art!

Objektiv One X Headkrack “Kold Winter Kruel Summer”

I recently have been obsessed with photo realism. I have delved into this type of work lately because I think that realism is perfect for expressing certain emotions, specifically shock, horror, and loneliness. Recently Headkrack came to me with a concept for an album cover. He wanted a bear eating a child. At first I wasn’t sure what to do because to portray something like this. To make accomplish the mammal on mammal violence it would require a photo of the event occurring in real life (which I dreaded searching for, and which begged many other question like “why was this person photographing this instead of stopping it”) or I would have to draw it. At first I drew it and it came out stylized and too cartoonish, which I liked but it just doesn’t suit Headkrack’s music. However, over the course of the last couple weeks I have sharpened my Photoshop skills! At first the concept showcased the bear after eating the child, but I think the capturing of the suspense in this cover was what made me love it. The child has not been eaten in this image so I am not a total sadist…. I just implied it. Also, if you don’t know Headkrack by now you should. I love the way he spits and always have. Make sure you stay on the lookout for this.

Objektiv One’s Pop Art Compendium

I have been digging for images a lot lately for my collages. The internet can not always suffice, sometimes you have to go to the source. If you want your collages to look like they are 50 years old then you should see what pictures looked like 50 years ago, right? Anyways, I have been playing with all of these pictures from the 70s and came up with a series of panels that hopefully will be released in booklet one day. However, here are three of those panels. All of these pieces were done in less then an hour each, back to back. So it was a three hour time span. Enjoy them.

Aesthetic Apparatus – Visualizing Music

I have been a fan of Aesthetic Apparatus for years and years. Suddenly when I was in college I found myself in printmaking pulling posters and things like that for fun. My love for them was rekindled again. Aesthetic Apparatus has been a leader in this style of band posters. They were up on it before most people were, and are still doing it today. I always loved them when I was younger because they printed the coolest posters and they were of my favorite bands. If you don’t know who they are you need to evaluate your life and get familiar. Their aesthetic is unmatched, and the way they layer transparent inks makes me sexually aroused almost. Also, don’t sleep on their portfolio. They are a design powerhouse.

Doublenaut Poster Designs!

I love hand screenprinted band posters. The simplicity of design that goes into them are astounding. Mainly because the designer has to stay under a certain amount of colors and still must create something interesting. I also like band posters because they never make any sense. Its just dope imagery and that is that. That being said, this company Doublenaut does a pretty amazing job of doing posters. I have a couple other companies I prefer more, but not very many. I love how Doublenaut can switch styles and genres. I also love Doublenaut, because they did a Bane / With Honor / Comeback Kid poster in ‘05. With Honor is and always will be one of the best hardcore bands ever (R.I.P.), and I love me some Comeback Kid and Bane. I had the opportunity to play shows with all of those bands and get to know some of the members even. Long live real hardcore, and long live screenprinted posters. Check Doublenaut out.
