Mid Week Slump: Public Enemy, Vampire Weekend, Jimi Hendrix, Pharoah Monch, Jeff Buckley & Ryan Adams

This week’s Midweek Slump is all about showing other people love. One of the greatest things a musician can do is cover one of his favorite artist’s songs and not only do it well but give it a new audience, a new light, and a new angle. All of these covers I picked did all of these things and have done it well. Sometimes its good to remind the people who inspire you that what they do is important. So for this week’s Midweek Slump maybe show some love to people who inspire you!

Public Enemy’s “He Got Game”

Public Enemy comes through sampling Buffalo Springfield for the He Got Game soundtrack. Not exactly a cover but PE comes through and kills it in their own style, and still keeps my head bobbing. I like hearing Public Enemy doing some feel good grooves, but they let Chuck D speak his find even on a feel good track. By the time Flava joins the track the gospel is in full effect as the choir rides out the groove while Flava Flav sweats the audience and gives us the good news according to his mind.

Vampire Weekend’s “Everywhere”

I love Fleetwood Mac, and apparently so does Vampire Weekend. Their rendition of “Everywhere” is great. It stays within Vampire Weekend’s style but still allows the original song to come through. Covers are often identical or too far removed. When you get a perfect balance between the original and covering artist is when often times I think they are the best. Now if only we can convince them to join forces all the time and be Fleetwood Weekend.

Pharoah Monch’s “Welcome To The Terrordome”

Public Enemy pops up again on this list but now as an artists being covered. In our troubled times Pharoah Monch decided to revive the message of this PE classic as a symbol of our times today. Not only Pharoah present his unique style to this, but he knew he had couldn’t mess this track up, and he definitely did not. He embraces the track as his own and just kills it.

Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along The Watchtower”

Jimi Hendrix takes Bob Dylan’s song “All Along The Watchtower” to new heights with his psychedelic jam session. Jimi turns it up to eleven and shows Bob Dylan how much he could rock if he started taking more LSD. Jimi’s version of this song includes so much soul its unbelievable. He truly made it his song and it became one of his greatest hits even.

Ryan Adams’ “Wonderwall”

Ryan Adams’ take Oasis’ original hit “Wonderwall” and crafts into a solo acoustic performance which is sure to impress. I love the original very dearly but I also love Ryan Adams’ take on this 90s jam. Vibe out to this one because “today’s gonna be the day that they are gonna throw it back to you”.

Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah”

Jeff Buckley does his version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”. Jeff Buckley was an amazing song writer, but even to this day this is one of his most famous and inspirational songs. The tremendous appeal about this song is that Buckley makes you really believe in what he is saying. It is like his voice can’t tell a lie on this song.
