It was confirmed earlier this month that MGMT will be one of the many guest appearances on The Flaming Lips new album Embryonic. This is exciting to see bands like this get together to form music. It seems The Flaming Lips have been front runners of these collaborations and have been constantly reaching out to younger artists. The three songs that have been released by The Lips off their new album are amazing and reminiscent of classic psych music. Also, the sound and textures are very lo-fi. Check out this track “Silver Trembling Hand” below.
Another thing that always impresses me about the Flaming Lips is they always have the most lavish artwork with deep color schemes. All of their artwork is always reminiscent of old pulp science movies, monster flicks, etc… Check these two album covers out. One for “Embryonic” and one for the pre-release songs. Amazing.

This album cover for Embryonic just blows my mind. The imagery is obviously interesting, but the graininess of the photos, and how it is desaturated is wonderful. My favorite part is the pink dot in the corner and the sketches though. Such wonderful additions that make the artwork that much more full and lush.
This cover just amazes me because its just an old school record cover with the band playing but then the typography, and colors just make me swoon. The yellow lines add a touch of something as well. I am now jealous of The Flaming Lips and their music…. and their design.
